AWD Civic CV Axles and Jack Shaft

Contributed by: Enginebasics.com

Well the project has taken a very major turn.  The automatic transmission has completely been discarded along with trying to use the factory ECU.  As mentioned in a previous page, we will be going full standalone on this build now and trying to control the advanced rear differential with the aftermarket ECU.

Next item to figure out was going to be the CV axles.  When Acura released the manual transmission for the TL SH AWD they must have known that because of the gearing, or maybe just the owners dropping the clutch, that the CV axles would need to be beefier.  The CV axles on the Acura RL, TL, and RDX are all the same 30mm diameter at the ends and 28mm shaft diameter.  On the TL manual transmission they grow to 32mm ends and 30mm shaft diameter.  This causes a problem since now when the RL CV axle is inserted into the transmission it doesn’t even contact the splines.   This causes another problem since on the passenger side it is the jackshaft with its carrier bearing that actually goes into the transmission, so the jack shaft of the RL cannot be used either.

Without pointing out the obvious it looks like we are in for a lot of custom parts.  The jack shaft of the 2010+ TL has a completely different part number than the RL jackshaft.  This makes sense since the TL jack shaft is 2mm larger, but what are the chances that the TL shaft and carrier bearing from the J37 will bolt up to the j35?  Who knows.

At this point all the TL CV axles and jack shaft are ordered and we will just have to hope for the best.
